FRANCESCO CLEMENTE

On 29 October 2010 the Mary Boone Gallery will open at its Fifth Avenue location A Private Geography, an exhibition of recent works on paper by FRANCESCO CLEMENTE.

The exhibition presents a sampling of contemplative work by Francesco Clemente. Created over four years and across four continents, the forty-four works span a breadth of media: from watercolor to ink to pastel.

At once variegated and integrated, the exhibition occasions reflection on the impact of Clemente’s physical location on his work, disclosing the extent to which his nomadic lifestyle informs his selection and treatment of medium and image.

In particular, the exhibition illustrates how the mystical traditions of India and Brazil continue to nourish Clemente’s work, as they counter his keen-yet-subtle sense of irony.

The exhibition, at 745 Fifth Avenue, will continue through 18 December 2010.

A fully-illustrated catalogue, with an essay by Arthur C. Danto, has been co-published by the Gallery and Edizioni Charta and will be available.
